MOUNT

Unique ID: NMS-F5D950

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

Incomplete medieval gilt copper alloy harness mount, discoidal, 2 joining pieces, approximately 1/3 missing, including outside part of the outside edge. The surviving repousse decoration comprises: A lion rampant to sinister or A demi lion rampant to sinister, within a beaded or pelleted border, a concentric rib and an outer flange with one surviving perforation, and another (possibly secondary) inset and slightly offset inside the concentric rib (clipping its inner edge). The lion is worn and obscure, has a vertical break along and across it's tail, and a long body with a break acoss the lion's head and another slightly oblique break in front of the beast and across the remains of two legs. There is little room for the lower body and legs and perhaps the figure represents a demi-lion. A secondary, central, perforation through the body of the lion contains iron corrosion. Diam. c. 55mm. 1mm thick. 13th-14th century.
