Object type certainty: Certain

A silver coin hoard consisting of 1,065 medieval pennies dating to the 12th century, known as the Prestwich hoard. The majority of the coins are of Henry I (1100-1135) and Stephen (1135-1154).

Notes:

The hoard was discovered during re-surfacing work in the playground of the Jewish Junior Day School, Bury New Road, Prestwich in 1972. This prompted an archaeological dig and the site was excavated 19th April to the 13th October. 1,065 coins, mainly dating from the reign of King Stephen, were discovered, originally hidden in a pot vase, or container, which was broken during the discovery.

The coins were divided between various museums with 334 being sold at auction by Sotheby's in 1974. 185 are in the British Museum, 9 in Bolton Museum (which are the 9 photographed for this record), and 12 and a half pennies in Bury museum.
