A copper alloy late Medieval to Post Medieval coin weight dating from AD 1422 - 1550. It is circular and uniface. It is decorated with a crowned shield (with a pointed base) bearing three fleur de lis. There is a crowned fleur de lis at each side of the shield. It is 13.7mm diameter, 2.8mm thick and 3.03g. It has a green patina.
This weight was made in either France or England for weighing the French Ecu or half ecu coin. The ecu was issued from the reign of Charles VII (AD 1422 - 1461) to Louis XI (AD 1436 - 1475). In AD 1525, the Ecu was current in England with a value of four shillings. See Withers (1995) Lions, Ships and Angels, page 39. The Ecu had a mass of about 3.5g, so this weight is probably for a whole ecu, rather than a half.
