Lead alloy ampulla fragment. Torn fragment from the bag-shaped lower part of a hollow cast pilgrim badge of flask-shaped form; patinated overall. One side bears prominent ridges and a shouldered edge, indicating a form imitating the scallop shell associated with the cult of St James of Compostella. This inspired the form of badges associated with many other shrines and saints. The other side is plain. The tearing of the badge may have been a quasi-magical act to improve the fertility of land by emptying its contents onto it, as torn ampulla fragments are common finds in rural locations. Suggested date: Medieval, 1200-1500.

Height: 34.1mm, Width: 18.4mm, Thickness (wall): 1.3mm, Weight (with trapped soil): 13.06gms.
