A late medieval copper alloy double oval buckle frame, dating to the 15th century. The pin is missing. The ornately moulded frame is flat and rectangular in cross-section with a narrowed integral strap bar. A series of lobed knops, each with a drilled pit, line the edges of the frame, with the exception of the centre of both outer edges. One of these lobes is broken with an open hole. The upper surface of the frame is decorated with engraved, oblique, double grooves within a linear border, while the reverse is plain. Both faces bear traces of white metal coating, probably tinning. The metal has a dark green patina with patches of bright green corrosion on both faces, particularly within the drilled pits. One of the loops of the frame is slightly bent.
The buckle is 41.7mm long, 39.2mm wide, 2.5mm thick and weighs 8.69g. Internal loop dimensions are c.31mm x c.12mm.
A very similar double oval buckle with an ornately moulded frame is published in Whitehead (1996), p.59, no.346, to which the author gives a date of c.1400 - 1500 and adds that buckles of this distinctive design are usually heavily tinned (ibid: 58). A further similar example from Kent, complete with pin, can be found on the PAS database as KENT-F64515.
