An incomplete Roman copper-alloy Hod Hill brooch (AD 43-75).

The upper part of the bow, the pin and part of the catch-plate are missing.

The front of the bow has two vertical flutes with a transverse ridge below. In plan, the leg is sub-triangular tapering to a knop at the base. The stub of the catch-plate which extends the full length of the leg is centrally placed.

This brooch is green with traces of a green patina and minute flecks of a white metal coating. The breaks are old.

Length: 29.9mm; width: 11.1mm. Weight: 2.02g.

A similar brooch has been published (Hattatt 1985: 58, fig. 25, ref: 320).

Bayley & Butcher (2004, p.153) suggest Hod Hill brooches went out of use c. AD 70.

In 'Late Iron Age and Roman Brooches', Worrell (1998, p. 9) notes that Hod Hill brooches are closely related to Aucissa brooches from which they probably developed. They occur widely on the continent, particularly in Gaul and the Rhineland (ibid.). The main centre of production was probably Gaul, but some were probably made in Britain (ibid.). They are often associated with military sites and probably introduced to Britain by the Roman army, although they are also found on non-military sites (ibid.). Hod Hill brooches are known from post-conquest depositions and the type is better known on the continent.
