Lead possible spindle whorl. Cast conical whorl or weight with one larger and one smaller flat side and moulded tapered aperture of maximum diameter 6.3mm whose rectangular shape on the narrower side may suggest the use of a hand made nail as a former. There are broad vertical flutes around about half the circumference. Patinated overall. The form compares with Walton Rogers form A2, and the aperture size would be apt to a light spindle of Anglo-Saxon type. Its mass would permit use for spinning a fine yarn. An alternative use as a weight might also be entertained. Suggested date: Early Medieval, 700-850.
