Medieval buckle (13th to 14th centuries): The copper alloy buckle frame is a sub-oval with a frame which expands in width towards the apex. The upper edge is decorated with a wide rectangular notch which is bordered by a high-relief V, beyond which the frame is narrowed to meet the integral buckle plate. The plate is an elongated trapezoid which terminates with a broken edge. The break is not recent. The other terminal has a collar which transverse the plate just below the frame, and is intersected with a circular perforation which allows for the pin to be fixed to the frame. The pin is now missing. The plate, on the outer surface is decoration with a finer transverse groove and has a small rivet hole. In profile the plate is flat and the frame is angled downwards slightly which may not be intentional. The surface of the frame has traces of gilding and the frame and plate have traces of a mid green patina. It measures 33.58mm long, 16.33mm wide and weighs 3.52g.
Similar buckles are illustrated in Egan and Pritchard (2002), Nos. 320 and 321 and the example from the Ashmolean are dated to the 13th to 14th centuries.
