CLOTH SEAL

Unique ID: SWYOR-A6FC04

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

A lead two-part cloth or bag seal probably dating from AD 1700 - 1900. Originally it had two circular discs joined by a tab, but only one now survives. The surviving disc has an integral oval tab which was pushed through a circular hole in the other disc before the seal was stamped. Part of an impressed deisgn is visible on the oval tab, in the form of raised, obliquely crossing lines. The complete disc is marked with scratched cursive writing which may read: (J)obb & / Ste(rl), but the letter forms are not clear. The seal measures 20.6mm long, 18.5mm wide and 4.4mm thick. 5.3g.

Compare DOR-BC04CF which notes that "According to Geoff Egan (pers. comm.) seals with a regular oval tab passed through a hole in the disc with scratched marks date from the late 18th - 19th century."

Inscription: (J)obb & / Ste(rl)
