DRESS HOOK

Unique ID: SUSS-7E9D11

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Published Find published

Fragment of a late Anglo-Saxon cast silver hooked tag, comprising the hook, animal-head terminal and part of the plate. Judging by the curvature of the surviving portion of the plate, it was originally circular or sub-circular in form. It has an incised stepped border and the remains of a more complex design in the central field, now limited to two tendril-like terminals. An animal's head viewed from above projects from the lower edge. It has circular ears with central semi-circular depressions, and incised details on the face. Transverse grooves mark the junction between the animal's snout and the hook, which extends from here and curves up and underneath. The back is plain and scratched.

Notes:

This hooked tag probably belongs to Read's Class F, Type 1 (2008, 34) with a circular or sub-circular plate and zoomorphic terminal linking the plate and hook. The type is dated broadly to the mid to later eleventh century; however, the remains of the decoration resemble the Trewhiddle Style, which would suggest an earlier date of the ninth to tenth century (compare terminals on BERK-84DCB9 and NMS-E20CD7). The animal-head terminal is very similar to those on strap-ends also of this date, and as such a date-range of the ninth to eleventh centuries is suggested.
