A complete Roman republican silver denarius of Octavian, dating to exactly 42 BC (Reece Period 1). Mint of Rome. Obverse: CAESAR, III VIR R P C, Helmeted bust of Mars right. Reverse: SC, legionary eagle surmounted by trophy of arms and flanked by two standards. Syndenham no. 1320, RRC p. 513, no. 497/3. Parts of the coin are slightly obscured by a thin brownish crust of corrosion products, although otherwise the piece survives in good condition. This coin comes from a scarce issue with fewer that 30 obverse and fewer than 33 reverse dies recorded.
