A copper-alloy Medieval vesica-shaped seal matrix, probably of 14th century date. The seal is vesica in shape with a flat outer face and a reverse that is plain and undecorated save for a thin vertical rib with the remains of a circular suspension loop. The outer face is damaged and abraded, therefore discerning the legend and decoration is difficult. The central depiction seems to be of a 'pelican in its piety' feeding three chicks in a nest resting on a branch. The legend is nearly completely illegible but likely reads: [ECC]E P[E]LICAN[VS] ('Here is a pelican'). Unfortunately due to its poor preservation, this seal cannot be attributed to a specific individual. It measures approximately 30 mm long, 17.66 mm wide (at centre), 3.7 mm thick (at centre) and weighs 5.91 grams.

Seal impression taken and retained for Sussex FLO collection and also for specialist Chris Whittick. This seal matrix was 3D imaged by the University of Brighton but the results were inconclusive.
