A complete copper alloy late Iron Age/early Roman toggle. It has an oval central section with a constriction at either end followed by slightly flattened knob. There is a rectangular hole through the central section. The surface of the metal is very corroded and has a dark brown patina.
Looped toggles appear to have been an antecedent of button and loop fasteners and were probably used both to fasten clothing and horses harnesses. This example belongs to a common form of which a number have now been recorded on the PAS database, e.g. SF-CC1085, SOM-484F4F, BH-417200, NMS-213C35 and NMGW-A2C3D7.
