An incomplete copper alloy possible tap of probable Post Medieval dating (AD 1600 - AD 1900).

The object consists of a cylindrical stem with moulded collar and bifurcated handle. The handle has two rounded projections both extending at 90 degree angles. Both ends terminate in rounded knops, one projecting downwards and the other extending upwards. The stem has a damaged end and a large oval piercing in the shaft to let liquid through when turned.

The tap is a dark green to brown in colour and has an uneven patina. Abrasion caused by movement whilst within the plough soil may have resulted in the loss of some of the original surface detail.

No precise parallel for its form has been noted. Margeson (1993, p138) notes how "taps with bifurcated keys are seen as an intermediate stage between Medieval tap keys in the form of a cockerel, fleur-de-lis or openwork trefoil, and the flat-topped T-shaped keys of the 18th century. They were used with cisterns." This example perhaps fits within that intermediate stage or is more in line with the later T-shaped keys.

The tap key measures 70.01 mm in length and is 34.8 mm wide. It has a thickness of 6.65mm and weighs 16.7 g.
