THIMBLE

A small copper alloy thimble. This artefact has been cast, then turned on a lathe. It has straight sides with a single rim, and a rounded but not overly-rounded top. Finally, it was probably punched with ten rows of dots on the sides, also while on the lathe, judging by the regularity of the dots; there is no ‘seam’ in the spacing of the dots. The end of the thimble has a pattern of punched square dots. This thimble was clearly manufactured. Curiously, its size shows that it was either a toy or a thimble for a child- was this for a workhouse or mill-working child? The regular nature of this thimble suggests it was Post-Medieval in origin.
The diameter of the thimble at the bottom is 13.04mm, at the top the diameter is 10.23mm.
