Lead alloy crucifix. Cast cruciform plate with the body of Christ appearing in identically moulded relief on both sides. The face is modelled schematically with elongated oval eyes, a large nose and a slit mouth. A triangular arrangement above the head, on the cross, has four sunken dots along each of its angled sides and may represent either a mitre-like crown or the 'charge sheet' script in which Jesus was described as King of the Jews. Three prominent dots standing proud represent nipples and navel, with the ribcage also emphasised. The arms are outstretched with enlarged splayed fingers and a crescentic depression for each palm. The lower body is covered by a long tunic with vertical folds, from which the calves protrude with feet pointing left and right, with toes represented. A curve at the top suggests the loss of a suspension loop. A similarly robed Christ appears on a crucifix of comparable size recovered in three joining fragments from three separate collections of detector finds from an Anglian and Anglo-Scandinavian site at Cottam, East Riding of Yorkshire, now reunited in the collections of the Hull and East Riding Museum. Suggested date: Early Medieval, 950-1150.
