An incomplete gilded copper alloy Roman disc brooch dating to AD 200 - 350, missing its central enamel or glass setting and pin. The disc is circular in plan and flat apart from three concentric ribs dividing the upper surface into three zones. The central rib is higher than the others, forming a collar for the central circular recess which would have once held the setting in place. The two outer rings are decorated with a regular pattern of engraved saltires alternating with transverse lines. The central collar and the two outer rings are gilded. There is a single lug on the reverse, probably for a spring, and a complete curled catchplate. The reverse, including the lug and catchplate, is tinned.
The disc brooch measures 41.5mm in diameter, is 6.60mm thick, or 14.9mm thick with catchplate, and weighs 27.80g.
Three similar gilded disc brooches are illustrated in Bayley and Butcher (2004), p.135, fig.101.
