FINGER RING

Unique ID: NMS-2DDFC8

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

Late medieval or early post-medieval gold posy ring. Very shallow D-sectioned band decorated externally with three rows of stamped square cells leaving a grid pattern in low relief. There is no trace of inlay surviving in the cells. Inscribed internally in roman capitals CONTINV x CONSTANT x. A small worn mark at the beginning of the inscription is probably another x. The ring is now bent out of shape and damaged in several places. Both the external decoration and internal inscription have several parallels including LON-DD00A6 and IOW-1C6D62.

Width of band 3mm. Now measuring 24 x 11mm. Weight 1.4g. 16th - 17th century.

The inscription features on several rings in the collection of the British Museum. One example (1961,1202.65) with a plain exterior band was found in the Fleet Ditch in the City of London in 1868 and donated to the British Museum in 1961 by Dame Joan Evans. It is inscribed 'x CONTINEW x CONSTANT x' and is dated to the 16th/17th centuries.
