BUCKLE

Unique ID: IOW-97EC35

Object type certainty: Possibly
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

An incomplete post-Medieval lead alloy (pewter?) buckle (c. 1660-c. 1720).

The pin, spindle and chape are missing.

The frame of the buckle is slightly curved in side profile and is sub-rectangular in plan with rounded corners. At the centre, the sides have drilled holes to accommodate an iron spindle which only survives within the holes. Centrally positioned on the front, at each outer edge there is a pair of transverse ridges that flank a pin rest. At each side, either side of the drilled hole, there is a small ridge and these are flanked by scrolls. There is iron staining on the underside of one outer edge.

The buckle has a shiny brown patina with some iron staining at the rear.

Length: 32.4mm; width: 23.7mm; thickness: 4.4mm. Weight: 6.65g.

Similar examples to this buckle can be seen in Ross Whitehead's book 'Buckles 1250 - 1800', pages 98-100, specifically examples 618 and 622 (page 99). Whitehead suggests that these buckles date from the post medieval period (1660-1720) and were used as shoe or knee buckles.
