An incomplete Roman copper alloy Aesica brooch of Hook Norton and related type, dating to the period c.AD 50-100. The brooch comprises one wing, the bow and most of the foot, but is missing the second wing, pin and most of the catchplate. The intact wing is cylindrical and contains the remains of the copper alloy axis bar. It terminates in a worn break at the central point where the pin would have attached. The bow curves upwards and expands to a rhombus in plan. A moulded longitudinal ridge is present down its centre and it is slightly concave. The bow narrows before expanding out to a fantail at its foot. This exhibits a longitudinal incised groove down its centre and a rounded knop on the remaining corner. The second corner is no longer present due to a worn break. The reverse is undecorated and has an elongated rectangular projection which forms the catchplate at the foot. A green patina is present on the surface.
The brooch measures 34.41mm in length, 17.36mm in width, 3.86mm in thickness and weighs 9.39g.
