A copper alloy harness mount of possible Roman date. The object is oval in plan with a hollow central face which is concave to the rear. The central face is rounded with flattened pellet eyes, arched brows and a wide nose. The mount consists of a slightly downward facing groove and either side of the head a ridged curve represents ears. The hair consists of a horizontal line or raised moulding above which there is not decoration, possibly representing a bald head in the style of a tonsure. This suggests the figure may be intended to be a monk.
The edges of the plate are undulating due to regularly spaced ridges with raised worn pellets at intervals. The top of the plate projects slightly outwards. In the centre of the lower rear of the object is a circular projection for attachment which is incomplete due to an ancient break. Where the plate projects at the top of the object is a small projection and there may have been another attachment at this point.
The object has a dark brown surface with small patches of light green corrosion in places.
A parallel for the mount has been recorded in Murawski, (2000), p 82 where it is dated as Roman. The object also has similarities to Post-Medieval harness mounts of different forms such as, NLM-888797 https://finds.org.uk/database/artefacts/record/id/723664 and LVPL-868BB7 https://finds.org.uk/database/artefacts/record/id/494712.
