MOUNT

Unique ID: LVPL-038418

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

An incomplete copper alloy zoomorphic mount of probable post-medieval date. The head is cast three dimensionally and is a chunky sub-triangular shape. The reverse of the mount is concave and has an integral stud or spike projecting from the centre. The spike is circular in cross-section and has a bifurcated terminal which appears to be complete. The top projection of the bifurcated stud is squared off while the lower projection is rounded.

The front of the face of the animal (possibly a sheep or young ram) is elaborately decorated. The top edge is undulating slightly with the hint of a rounded horn projecting from the right side (when viewed facing). The top of the possible horn is worn and rounded and it is difficult to say if it is complete or has broken during antiquity. The opposing 'horn' is unclear. At each side of the upper edge is a moulded lentoid ear. In the centre of the forehead is a raised oval ridge below which are two curved ridged brows and lentoid eyes. The ridge of the nose is straight and runs downwards from between the brows flaring out to form join the rounded snout. Each sound of the snout is a moulded lentoid nostril. The object has a dark brown patina and is in good condition.

There is a slim chance this object could be Roman and relating to the bovine bucket mounts which are found. However taking into account the unusual form of the animal, the rear attachment and the patina of the object which is more usual for post-medieval finds a post-medieval date is more likely.

Notes:

Vessel mounts dating to the late Iron Age and Roman period in the form of a bull or ox such as YORYM-005786, https://finds.org.uk/database/artefacts/record/id/727469 have been recorded on the PAS database. Of these objects corney states: "The object closely resembles animal head mounts frequently associated with ornate buckets or vats... These generally take the form of bull or ox heads.... buckets or vats of an ornate type are a feature of rich funerary deposits in the Late Iron Age." (Corney, M, 2000, pp. 255), (DOR-55BFDC).
