Roman copper alloy zoomorphic brooch. Length 30mm ,width12mm, thickness 8mm, weight 5.61grams. The object has a rectangular form and a D shaped cross section. It has an elongated curved body with a hollow underside which tapers to a point at the pin end. At this end, the underside has a semi-circular projecction which would house a hinged pin. It has a narrow lip around the edge of the upper surface and at the wider end has a spherical projection, sitting in the centre of the rounded upper surface, which resembles a head? the brooch terminates at this end with a narrow rectangular projection, which houses the remains of the catchplate underneath. The brooch may be formed to resemlbe a bird, although its shape is reminiscent of a sphinx or a lion? with possible feet represented by the rectangular projection at the wide end underneath the head.
