BROOCH

Unique ID: WAW-2BFA67

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Published Find published

The brooch is a Colchester derivative Polden Hill (flat wing ends type, West Midlands), cf. Mackreth 2011, Transitional type 3, Plate 45.

The wings are semi-cylindrical with wing caps. However both caps are incomplete. The axis bar, spring and pin are missing. Behind where the axis bar and spring should be there is a hollow, how deep is uncertain, but it is filled with a black ceramic-like substance. The exterior of the wings are decorated with three deep vertical grooves.

The bow head is hump-like. The bow head is decorated with three grooves which continue down the bow. The bow gradually tapers until it has been broken, at approximately the mid point. The break is not recent. In section the bow is semi-circular with indentations for the grooves.

The catchplate is missing due to the lower portion ofthe bow being missing.

The surface of the brooch is abraded and there are traces of a grey/green patina within the grooves on the wings.

The width across the wings is 28.6mm and the length from the upper edge of the wings to the bow terminal is 24.8mm. It weighs 9.29g.
