Object type certainty: Probably

An incomplete cast copper alloy brooch of Colchester derivative, Polden Hill (Mackreth 2011, Part 3, Group 5.c, Plate 50, flat wing ends type, Western Group) of Roman date (AD70-110). The wings are semi-cylindrical and the wing caps are perforated. The axis bar and spring are present being also formed of copper alloy - the spring is formed of eight turns and is fixed by an external loop through a raised and cast lug positioned at the centre of the head. The pin is lost but would have been formed from the spring. The bow head is hump-like, and slightly angular (comma shaped) in profile. The bow has a faceted D shaped cross section. It extends to a broken and abraded point on the upper bow; the foot and catch-plate are lost. The bow of the brooch is decorated with a cast design comprising a spinal ridge which descends from the reward facing hook down the bow of the brooch; it is flanke dby two parallel riased ridges. The brooch is a mid green colour with well formed surface patina. Similar brooches can be seen in Richard Hattatt's Visual Guide to Ancient brooches (pp 300 fig; 159) and Bayley and Butcher: Roman Brooches in Britain (pp 89-92).

The brooch measures 18.3mm length, 19.5mm width (across wings), 7.4mm width across bow, is 3.2mm thick across the bow, and weighs 5.4 grams.

Class: Colchester derivative, Polden Hill (Mackreth 2011, Part 3, Group 5.c, Plate 50, flat wing ends type, Western Group)
