A complete post-Medieval copper-alloy trade weight from the reign of Charles I (1625-1649) or Charles II (1660-1685).
The weight is shallow cup-shaped (a disc with a raised rim) and has three symbols stamped into the face; a crowned C at 11 o'clock (C for Charles) which may suggest the weight was checked during the reign of Charles I (1625-1649) or Charles II (1660-1685), a sword at 1 o'clock (for St Paul's and the City of London), and a ewer at 5 o'clock (for the London Founder's Company who had a Royal charter to verify trade weights). At the front, concentric striations within the rim may be related to lathe-work. Annulet at centre. When made the mass may have been refined through filing; numerous diagonal fine marks are visible at the rear.
This weight as a green patina overall.
Upper diameter: 19.0mm; lower diameter: 18.3mm; thickness: 4.9mm. Weight: 6.23g. (0.2195 ounces).g.
Notes:
The 'C' could possibly be 'G'.
