TREASURE CASE : 2016 T138.

A complete gold posy ring of post-medieval date. The posy ring is circular in plan with a D-shaped section. There is no evidence of a join on the hoop and the exterior surface is undecorated. The interior surface of the ring is inscribed with italic text reading 'Hearts United Live Contented'. The stamped makers mark 'Bu' is present at the beginning of the text.

A number of nicks and cut are present on the posy ring as a result of damage while in the ground.

Dimensions:

Diameter: 23.3mm; Width: 5.1mm; Thickness: 1.8mm; Weight: 7.4g.

Discussion:

The makers mark Bu (with the second letter in lower case) represents the first two letters of the maker's surname, instead of the usual initials of first and surname). This was the practice during the years when the higher standard of silver (the Britannia standard) was used, ie between 1697 and 1720. This applied principally to silver, and was not obligatory for gold workers, but nonetheless it is reasonable to assume that the mark was used during these years.

A few makers are recorded with relevant surnames including Thomas Burridge in London in 1706 and 1717-18. Burridge's mark however included a flower or star above the initials. A York maker, William Busfield is recorded for 1702-3, but that also has a device above the U. The Chester maker Nathaniel Bullen recorded for 1703-4, used a 'BU' mark with no device above, but the u is more italic and the initials are in a rectangle.

A posy ring with the same inscription has also been recorded as 2012 T358 (DEV-62D777) though with an uncertain makers mark.

The practice of giving rings engraved with mottoes at betrothals or weddings was common in England from the sixteenth century onwards, and continued until the late eighteenth century. Posy rings could, however be given on many other occasions as a token of friendship or loyalty. The inscription is generally found on the interior of the ring, hidden to everyone except the wearer and most of the sentimental mottoes were taken from popular literature of the time.

Conclusion:

In terms of age and as the object contains a minimum of 10% precious metal it qualifies as Treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996.
