A silver three pence of Elizabeth I (1558-1603) struck at the mint in London. Initial Mark: Eglantine Obverse and Ermine Reverse: Date 1573 above shield. Interestingly this coin seems to have been gilded but there is no other evidence of alteration such as application of pin or piercing to suggest it has been removed from circulation.

Other gilded Elizabethan small silver coins have been recorded on the PAS database - in the record for a similar gilded threepence from Chilcomb, Hampshire (HAMP-8D0E55) it notes:

The gilding is unusual, but documented on this database on a three-halfpence (SWYOR-B3A4D0) and a halfgroat (LVPL-CE05C7). Barrie Cook of the British Museum commented 'Shakespeare mentions 'gilded twopences', whereby halfgroats could pass muster as half-crowns if you didn't look too closely.'
