A fragment of a Post-Medieval (AD 1650-1800) Toy Gun. All that remains of the gun is the butt/handle which is made of lead and part of the iron trigger mechanism and trigger. of the lock. Some of the long cylindrical barrel is missing. It is cast in one piece with a groove along the top edge to accommodate the iron mechanism, mentioned above. The external surface is decorated with scrolls and curlicues of vegetal character although majority of it is obscured by corrosion and patination. A number of rivets at the top and bottom of the crescent shaped handle as well as some extra lead rivets on one side of the handle. The handle is splayed open at the top where the rest of tha hammer mechanism would have been linked into the trigger mechanism. The piece is a mixutre of cream, with small patches of light grey on the lead parts and light brown where the iron trigger and the rivets are.

For more complete examples see: SUR-66DB81, SF-4EA5E6, WILT-319F5D.
The form resembles that of toy petronels or cavalry pistols reported from London, where a 17th-century date is suggested (Forsyth and Egan 2005, page 97, no. 1.39), However later examples all the way up to the early 20th century are known.
