A collection of nine lead alloy 'hammered slugs', or modified lead shot of probable 17th century date. The hammered slugs are broadly rectangular in plan with most being broadly square in cross section. These objects were originally round lead balls and were hammered into shape to reduce their calibre (Foard 2009:10). The length of the slug is irrelevent for its function (ibid.). The original calibre of the modified balls (revealed through the weight) reveals that the slugs were made from four pistol shot (7-16g), one carbine shot (16-23g), one possible arquebus or caliver shot (24-29g, however these were old weapons at the time of the Civil War and may have been 'pressed into service' (Harding 2012)), and three musket balls (30-48g).
