A late Iron Age silver coin, possibly a fractional unit or contemporary copy struck in the North East. The coin measures 8mm in diameter and is broken at one edge where approximately one fifth of the coin is missing. The coin is dished in plan, and decorated on both sides. The obverse is convex and is decorated with an abstract petal motif. The motif is comprised of a central circle with four oval petals evenly spaced around its perimeter. In the centre of the circle is an inverted 'S'-shaped motif. In each petal is a pellet. A further pellet decorates each angle between the petals. The reverse is concave and is comprised of a boar shown in profile to the right. A series of crescent-shaped bristles rise up along its back. A possible pellet is located below its belly.
This coin cannot be paralleled, though the resemblance of the boar to many of the boar-horse units and half-units issued in the North East, in the area attibuted to the Roman civitas of the Corieltavi, suggests it was struck in this region.
The flower/petal motif on the obverse of the coin somewhat resembles Hobbs no's 3256 and 3257, but the reverse of these two coins display a horse instead of a boar (Hobbs 1996)..
The coin weighs 0.14g.
