A fragment from the leg of a copper alloy vessel, probably a cooking pot or cauldron of Medieval or Post-Medieval date, AD 1200 - 1600. The leg is flat on the reverse and terminates in a slightly angled foot that is flat on the underside and has a rounded front edge. The front of both leg and foot are fluted, with a rounded, raised ridge running down the centre and a broad, shallow, longitudinal groove on each side. The front of the leg and the underside of the foot have a black deposit that is probably the product of burning or sooting. The fragment has a light green patina. It is 42.5mm long, 35.3mm wide and 15.4mm thick. It weighs 72.25gm.
Medieval pot legs of this type are illustrated in Egan, G. 1998. The Medieval Household. Daily Living c.1150-c.1450, page.164, figure. 132, number 460. Egan comments that commonly used cooking vessels in the Medieval period include skillets, ewers, and cauldrons. Compare also Bailey,G. 1997, Detector Finds 3, page 36, numbers 6 and 10.
