An incomplete copper alloy composite box chape, from a sword or dagger scabbard, of probably the Early Post Medieval period, dating from c. AD 1500 to c. AD 1600.
The chape has been made from a front plate, and a U-shaped box back plate. It is broadly heater (shield) shaped, with a trifoliate top, there probably was a circular knop (with circular depression) at the base, but this is missing, presumed lost in antiquity. The front plate has an embossed, moustached and bearded man as decoration, within a shield shaped cartouche. The box is made from a U shaped strip, fixed to a shield shaped flat back plate. Only part of the strip remains on the right side, the rest has broken away. The remaining strip protrudes out, away from the reverse of the plate.
It measures 22.8 mm in length and is 14.2 mm wide. It has a maximum thickness of 7.6 mm (when measured with the remaining strip) and the plate is 2.6 mm thick. It weighs 3.5 g.
The box chape is a dark green in colour, with an even surface patina. Abrasion, caused by movement whilst within the plough soil, has resulted in a loss of some of the original surface detail.
Similar box chapes have been recorded on the PAS database as IOW-7D1643 and WMID-1AB1D8. The latter object was found in the same field as the object in this record.
