BUCKLE

Unique ID: BUC-C61B87

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Published Find published

An oval copper-alloy buckle frame with ornate outside edges and a rectangular plate. The buckle frame has a narrowed offset bar and pronounced knops on the outer edge. The pin has a moulded collar at the point where it joins the bar. The plate has a cut-out to allow for the pin to be fitted, and is decorated with a crudely executed incised design. A border delineated by a line runs along the two long edges enclosing an inscription. Only AE is decipherable, probably part of "Ave Maria", a common medieval talismanic inscription.

Similar buckles of this shape found in London excavations are broadly dated to the 13th/early 14th century. A particularly well executed inscribed example was found during the excavations at Tattenhoe, and an even more cryptically inscribed composite strap-end came from Westbury by Shenley, both in Milton Keynes (Mills in Ivens et al 1995, p. 336, no. 7, with copious references). Parallels on the PAS database include SF-0B21E1 and CORN-CCE175.

Inscription: A[V]E [MARIA]
