A lead spindle whorl of uncertain date, Iron Age to Post Medieval, but perhaps more likely to be Early Medieval or Medieval, about AD 850 - 1500. It is disc shaped with a central hole which has a diameter of 10mm. The whorl has two flat faces and rounded sides. Spindle whorls are notoriously difficult to date as few are found in secure contexts. However, this example can be seen to fit into Coppergate type B2, with a wide central hole. This shape is know form the Iron Age onwards, but the wide central hole may indicate a date from the 9th century onwards (Rogers, 2007: Cloth and Clothing in early Anglo Saxon England, p 25). The whorl has a smooth white patina and there are slight traces of decoration in the form of faint incised oblique lines round the upper half. It is 26.9mm diameter, 14.9mm thick and 54.98g.
