A possible unfinished leaf-shaped arrowhead preform dating to the Neolithic (c. 4000-3000 BC). The support consists of a broadly leaf-shaped tertiary flake with a single flake negative on its dorsal face. On the ventral side, a prominent bulb of percussion is visible in co-incidence with a facetted but irregular platform. The central axis of the flake is slightly canted, and the original termination of the support seems to have been as a step fracture. No secondary modification is visible on the dorsal surface, but on the ventral left side from the mesial section to the tip of the proximal end, inverse invasive pressure-flaking is visible which has served to shape part of the left-hand edge of the flake and create a point at the tip of the piece.
Measurements;
Maximum length (mm): 22.54
Maximum width: 17.31
Thickness at midpoint: 3.98
Thickness at platform: 4.42
Platform length:8.91
Weight (g): 2.45
Notes:
The fairly small extent of the secondary working on this piece suggests that this arrowhead was not finished (perhaps due to the thickness at the proximal end) although the shape of the piece is already very consistent with other Neolithic leaf-shaped arrowheads which have been invasively flaked over their entire surface. It may be that this flake was selected as an arrowhead due to its pre-existing suitable shape and required minimal modification in order to be utilised.
