MOUNT

Unique ID: YORYM-F4F659

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

An incomplete copper alloy mount of Early-Medieval date. The mount is sub-rectangular with sides which taper slightly from the complete attachment end to a broken and worn zoomorphic terminal at the opposite end. The main plate appears undecorated though bears faint and patchy strips of silvering. What remains of the zoomorphic terminal comprises a Style 1 face mask with prominent eyes within prominent rings. Bulbous cheeks are present below the eyes though are incomplete due to the break. The face retains thickly applied, though patchy gilding. The reverse of the mount is flat and undecorated with three integral projecting rivets; two from the attachment end and one to the face terminal.

A similar mount is illustrated in East Anglian Archaeology 84; A corpus of Anglo-Saxon Material from Suffolk, p,123, fig.7, no.69.

The metal has a dark green patina and is worn. The object is 30.9mm long, 15.8mm - 12.2mm wide, 1.6mm thick and weighs 5.9g
