COIN

Unique ID: LANCUM-B699FA

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Published Find published

Denarius of Septimius Severus dating from AD 193-194 (Reece Period 10). Eastern mint.

Obv: IMP CE L SEP SE-(V PERT ...), laureate head right

Rev: [BONAE] S-P-EI II COS, Spes walking left, lifting the hem of her skirt and holding a flower in right hand

Ref: Cf. RIC IV, pt 1, p. 140, nos. 364-366 var.

Note: The obverse legend should read: "IMP CAE L SEP SEV[...]", but instead reads "IMP CE L SEP SEV...". This is probably the result of an engraver's error.

The reverse legend reads "[BONAE] SPEI II COS". It belongs to a series of coins struck at the so-called 'Emesa' mint bearing a reverse legend ending with ... II COS.

The reverse BONAE SPEI COS II as well as the IMP CE L ... obverse legend are unlisted in RIC.

A coin struck with the same reverse die is discussed online: https://www.cointalk.com/threads/a-pair-of-ugly-denarii-of-septimius-severus.256376/
