An assemblage of 7 iron nails of probable Roman date. Three of the nails conform to Manning's Type 1b and exhibit a square shank and domed head. The largest nail can be classified as a Manning type 2 nail and exhibits a square shank with a lozengiform head. Two of the nails are missing their heads and are, therefore, unclassifiable. The smallest nail is heavily corroded and is also unclassifiable.
Iron nails are intrinsically difficult to date out of context. These artefacts were recovered alongside a range of other material dating from the Iron Age to post medieval period. The date range proposed for this assemblage is based on their similarity to Manning's (1985) typology, however, it must be ackowledged that a later date is also possible.
