Complete copper alloy and lead cuff link dating from the later 17th or early 18th century. Flat discoid plate with a bevelled rim and with its hollow back partly filled with lead, attached via short rod to a flat circular back flat which is decorated with two simple incised rings around its out circumference The front bears the motif of paired hearts beneath a crown against a stippled field, and the latter retains faint traces of white metal plating. The grey tint indicates tin in the metal mix. The motif is traditionally associated with the marriage of Charles II (1660-1685) to Catherine of Braganza, and appeared on silver cuff links made in loyal celebration. It was probably adopted more widely for its broader romantic connotations. The lead inset and plating may both have been intended to make a cheap version resemble a more costly cuff link.
