A fragment of a cast copper alloy medieval to post-medieval domestic cooking vessel. The fragment is part of the rim and some of the vessel wall, breaking where the wall flares outwards, suggesting the form may have been a cauldron or posnet. The rim of the vessel is upright but does have a slight inward facing angle. The outer wall of the vessel is rough while the inside is smooth.
Copper alloy vessels appear to have come into use during the 13th century and continued through into the 17th century, passing out of use in the 18th and 19th centuries (Butler et al. 2009:1), after which cast iron vessels became more popular due to the ease and cheapness of production.
