Post-medieval silver hawking vervel. D-sectioned band, the convex face inwards, engraved externally BILNGFORD IN NOR presumably for Billingford. There is a faint transverse line between the G and E indicating the join in the ring, and the remains of a very worn and now indecipherable mark between the R and B, perhaps a maker's mark. External diameter 11mm. Internal diameter 9mm. Width of band 2.5mm. Weight 0.57g. Circa 17th century.

Discussion: Vervels were fixed to the leather jesses on the feet of birds of prey and may have served as points of attachment for the leash. They often occurred in multiples, with the name of the owner of the bird on one vervel and the place of residence (as here) on the other. The form and lettering on this item are consistent with another vervel reported under the Treasure Act and recorded with the Portable Antiquities Scheme: 2007 T378; KENT-C245C7 from Chiddingstone, Kent, whilst 2013 T477; SOM-D02D71 from Taunton, Somerset shares similar calligraphy, particularly the 'R' with the elongated leg. Both examples are thought to date from the 17th century.

Notes:

The age and precious metal content of this item therefore qualify it as treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996.
