A copper alloy medieval composite heraldic harness pendant dating to the period c.AD 1300 - 1400. The pendant is in the shape of a shield and bears an inlaid enamel design probably depicting a lion rampant. The enamel is heavily degraded and where it reamins, is now a dark red/brown colour. Traces of gilding remain on the front and sides of the plate. The harness pendant has an offset perforated suspension loop which expands into a rectangular plate which terminates in an old break. The suspension loop has been attached to the plate by a rivet which does not pierce the front of the plate and solder, traces of which remain around the edge of the attachment plate. The harness pendant has a mottled dark brown and green patina and exhibits extensive traces of iron corrosion product across all surfaces, obscuring much of the surface detail.
The pendant measures 53.63mm in length, 26.83mm in width, 4.71mm in thickness and weighs 21.70g.
Cf. Saunders 1991 p. 24, fig. 3 which bears a similar design, but exhibits an integrally cast loop.
