A fragment of a copper alloy zoomorphic single-loop buckle frame, consisting of one side only, probably the bar.
The bar is sub-circular in cross-section and has been bent. At either end is a triangular animal head, attached by the side of the head, both facing the same way. The heads are identical, each being faceted to either side of a central ridge giving a triangular cross-section. There is a transverse ridge at the wider end (representing a brow ridge) with a notch at the mid point forming two ears, and an incised line behind. The eyes of each are circular recesses. Dimensions: 42.3 mm x 12.5 mm x 5.1 mm. Weight: 6.20g.
Similar but more complete zoomorphic buckles (such as WILT-952048 or BERK-0BE984) have been identified as being decorated in Borre style, dating them to the tenth (or possibly early 11th) century. Most are D-shaped, but occasionally rectangular examples are found. Also see an example in the Ashmolean Museum (Hinton (1974, 60-1, no. 32).
