An incomplete copper-alloy Roman Colchester-derivative bow brooch of unidentified type. Only the foot and catchplate survive, the catchplate either complete or almost complete.
The foot consists of a sub-triangular shaped cross-section due to a longitudinal mid rib which runs along the centre of the upper surface and flatter convex reverse surface. The cross-section would be oval without the presence of the mid rib. The length of what survives is 19.0mm. The width at the worn break is 4.7mm and thickness is 3.4mm. The bow tapers slightly to a width at the base of 3.3mm. The catch-plate runs along the underside of the bow from the tip of the foot for the entire surviving length of this fragment. The catch-plate has a triangular shape with a height of 5.7mm and thickness of 1.9mm. The return runs the full length of the longer egde (not including the edge that is the underside of the bow) of the triangular plate. The weight of this fragment is 1.78g.
This fragment of Colchester-derivative brooch which would suggest a first -late second century AD date, however this is uncertain due to the limited surviving portion of the brooch.
