CLOTH SEAL

Unique ID: LON-51226C

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Published Find published

Large, lead, post medieval 16th-19th century, circular cloth seal dated AD.1571. The seal has an off centre pelleted ring that contains the legend, DVYT/ COLCESTER/ BAYE/ 1571. The lower half of the date has been lost due to the off centre stamping. The reverse of the seal has two squashed lead rivets attached but is otherwise undecorated. The object has a white/grey patina of lead oxide. Seals made by the Dutch textile industry in Colchester all carried the date AD.1571, as this was when the industry was founded in the city, rather than recording the year of sealing (Egan 1992).
