An incomplete Lead or Lead alloy Unifaced Token of the Late Medieval to Post Medieval period, dating to AD 1400 - AD 1800.
The token broadly oval in plan and rectangular in cross section. The obverse depicts a segmented design resembling a wheel, with eight raised spokes crossing in the centre, with a thin border around the outside (Powell Type: 3 or possibly celestial Powell Type: 26)). In the top right segment is a shorter diagonal raised line dividing the segment. The reverse is plain and undecorated.
The token measures 24.3 mm in length and is 26.7 mm wide. It has a thickness of 3.7 mm and weighs 11.3 g.
The token is a mid to dark grey in colour with an even patina. Abrasion caused by movement whilst within the plough soil may have resulted in the loss of some of the original surface detail.
Lead tokens are a frequently occurring find, with a variety of different designs. Tokens like this, were used as tallies or as replacement low denomination coinage during the Medieval and Post Medieval periods. Other examples of this type of token can be found on the database, including WMID-0D8887 and WMID-51064C.
