An incomplete copper-alloy buckle plate of medieval date. The plate is broadly rectangular, measuring 36.25mm along its longest side, 21.78mm at its widest point tapering to 19.59mm at the furthest point away from the strap bar. The buckle plate is formed from a single piece of copper alloy bent over and back on itself, with a pin slot and frame recesses cut leaving two hinge loops. The front plate is thicker (0.84mm) than the back plate (0.55mm). The back plate is rectangular in cross-section, though smaller than the front (length 30.19mm, width 16.02mm).
There are four rivet holes which all pierce both the front and back plate. Two of the rivets, nearest the hinge loops, are still in situ and are made of copper alloy. The rivets stand proud of the face of the front plate and are 3.7mm in diameter. The two missing rivets holes are approximately 2.3mm in diameter. The front face is decorated with an incised line made up of short punchmarks, which runs as a border around the entire outer edge approximately 1.36mm in from the sides. A small part of the front face has been damaged and lost. Owing to the discolouration at the break this appears to have have happened in antiquity.
Similar in form to WILT-C5A230, and also to a gilded buckle plate from London found in a context of c. 1230-c. 1260 AD (Egan and Pritchard 1991, no. 304).
