HARNESS FITTING

Unique ID: PUBLIC-85A6BB

Object type certainty: Probably
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

A fragment from a cast copper alloy fitting, probably from a later Early-Medieval / Anglo-Scandinavian harness, either a bit link or cheek piece. The fragment consists of an oval loop with a bar attached to one side. The loop is a quarter circle in cross section, with the rounded edge from the front to the outer edge. The bar is 'D' shaped in cross section with a rounded face and a flat rear. The bar bulges outwards slightly to form a boss at the end furthest from the loop. Beyond this is a well abraded, old break where the link would have attached to the rest of the fitting.

The bare metal is red brown under a dark green patina.

Length: 25.1 mm, Width: 16.9 mm, Thickness: 3.7mm. Weight: 3.32 grams

A similar fragment is SOM-EE3642. This fragment may of come from a bit link like SUSS-03B786 or a cheek piece like NMS-62CD20
