Unique ID: SF-8144A8

A Roman copper-alloy buckle and plate. The frame is D-shaped and measures 18.6mm in width and 14.3mm in length. It has perforated terminals through which a seperate bar is present. A cast copper-alloy pin remains in situ around this bar, it measures 15.2mm in length and 2.2mm in width. It has a circular hole, which the bar runs through, there is a transverse ridge inbetween the hole and the shaft of the pin.

The plate is folded copper-alloy and rectangular in shape measuring 16.1mm in length and 15mm in width. This plate has a central rivet through it. It was originally hinged with another plate, the central part of this hinge survives as does a fragment of the other plate within the attachment end of the surviving plate.

This buckle is very similar to examples from Risstissen, Germany and is likely to have been associated with armour of the Augustan to Hadrianic periods, it is therefore 1st century in date (Bishop and Coulston, 1993, 89, fig 52, no 19-20).
